The 1967 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 was the first road-going Mustang with Ford's 428-cid V-8 engine. It combined a sports car philosophy with muscle car attitude. The GT500s were outfitted with fiberglass body pieces, including an elongated nose, a hood with functional scoops, and four body side intakes. The fiberglass tail had a molded spoiler and sequential turn-signal lamps borrowed from the Mercury Cougar. High-beam headlights were mounted in the center of the grille.
The GT500 was instantly popular. Despite its larger engine, it was designed to be a more usable road-going vehicle than the lighter, race-ready GT350, and outsold the 289-powered engines nearly 2-to-1.
This was the last Mustang built by Shelby-American. Future models were produced by Ford -- with input from creator Carroll Shelby. The '67 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 carried a sticker price of $4,195.
