About Superbird

The 1970 Plymouth Superbird, also known as a "Winged Warrior," was created as a high-speed race machine designed for the NASCAR races, but it was also available to the public. The Superbird was basically a modified Plymouth Road Runner. It sported an aerodynamic nosecone, adding 19 inches to its length, and retractable headlights. To counter its lightness at high speed, a rear wing was mounted high on very tall tailfins. The height was mostly to give clearance to lift the trunk lid, but it probably didn't hurt to put the wing into less disturbed air.

Plymouth built a total of about 1,920 - 1,970 Superbirds. Pete Hamilton won the 1970 Daytona 500 with a Plymouth Superbird. In total, the vehicle won more than 200 races, earning 7 NASCAR titles and numerous Piston Cups.

Despite its success on the tracks, only a total of 1,920 - 1,970 Superbirds were built, and only in 1970.

The iconic 1970 Plymouth Superbird had an original base price of $4,289.
